The Vultures traveled to the beautiful Mt Bachelor Ski Area for Round 3 of the state race series. This course is made harder by the elevation of 6200’, adding a layer of difficulty requiring good pacing and fitness to make it through. The course was a mix of twisting duffy, dirt singletrack Bend is famous for, steep, punchy jeep roads, and of course, lava rock.
Many riders took advantage of the Mt Bachelor Bike Park, one of the Northwest’s premiere lift assist trail systems. With a great foundation of skills, practice, and self-risk management, the Vulture riders did a great job riding safely on the more difficult terrain.
Sunday morning brought some freezing temps and iced up windshields, and our newly-purchased fire pits were working overtime. This quickly gave way to warm, blue skies for race time. Our cheering squad was out in full force, with the middle school boys finishing their wave and heading straight to the trail to encourage the girls and the HS boys wave.
The story of the day was the tight racing in several fields, particularly the 6th grade boys, 8th grade girls, and Sophomore boys. A special shout out goes to Tyler Rogers and Ryder Mckernon for completing their bonus laps for the first time – not an easy course to do it on! Nice work, boys.
There were some shakeups in the overall results that will make for some awesome storylines going into the final conference race on October 15th in Klamath Falls.
