Newport Gnarnia Race Report
Vulture riders traded smokey, hot weather for coastal fog and even sunshine this Labor Day weekend in the 5th annual Newport Gnarnia race hosted by the Oregon Interscholastic Cycling League.
This course treated riders to punchy climbs, roots, and unlike years’ past – dust! Our Vultures were right at home in the dry conditions, and practices leading up to the race focused on how to navigate those tricky climb sections. The crowd-favorite “magic carpet” descending zone of the course featured singletrack weaving through moss and roots, allowing the older riders opportunities to showcase their skills by doubling or gapping entire sections in the air.
With fields bigger than ever, 400 racers took to the course over two days. The Vultures race in the Southern Conference, and feasted on podiums this weekend. We took home several leaders jerseys with first place finishes. Congrats to the following riders for WINS in their categories:
- 1st 8th Grade Girls Jade Savage
- 1st 8th Grade Boys Dylan Kuhl
- 1st Sophomore Boys Ossie Dunn
- 1st JV Boys Dylan Kuhl
- 1st Varsity Boys Jade Rhode
We had several additional podium finishes:
- 2nd 6th Grade Boys Porter Younkin
- 4th 6th Grade Boys Rye Rilling
- 3rd 6th Grade Girls Anika Stadtmueller
- 5th 8th Grade Boys Tahvo Hansen

Big congrats to all 20 riders who showed up, pushed themselves, and grew as riders this weekend! The Vultures will be back at it the weekend of the 17th as they travel to Prineville for Round 2 of the series.
